Suza's Wedding Thread

Okay, since every bride- or groom-to-be I have ever known has been drowned by the well-meaning advice of every Tom, Dick, and Ferret they know, why should our dear Suza be spared? So, with love and the best wishes of your humble host, let's all put in our two cents for mr suza & suzagoob's wedding, sponsored in part by Brushfires of Freedom...

Colors, honeymoon, songs, food, wedding night lingerie - no topic is off topic. One rule only: BE NICE or BE DELETED!!!

oooh, a thread I don't have to hi-jack - EXCELLENT! :)

I have no advice, just congrats to Suza and Mr. Suza. :)

Best wishes, Suza, and congratulations, Mr. Suza!!

Most of my advice bromides begin "Don't . . . ." or "Never . . . ." One of them is ok, though:
Never miss an opportunity to have fun.

J.M. Ferretti said...

So, do you have honeymoon plans? Big wedding or small? Colors, flowers - dish!!!

The Inner Eyeball said...

Why are you getting married in the Catholic Church?

You know, if Mr. Suza signs a paper promising to raise the children Catholic, that is a legally binding statement that could be used against you should you ever decide to end your marriage. That is , of course, should you be blessed with children.

Hey ferret...I know this is off-topic, but that never stopped me. I had a strange dream...wrds kept coming at me like you wouldn't believe. Seeing how you're a real wordsmith and all I thought maybe you could decipher this for me?

Fecund,Funny, Freed om? I can't find a single that relates them? Can you?

The Inner Eyeball said...

There I go again. Laughing and not reviewing my words.

I meant to say I can't find a single thing that relates these words: Fecundity, Funny, Freed om.

Mindful Life said...

Thanks for the well wishes everyone...I know that no one cares about this stuff other than the bride, so it is very kind of you to pretend to be interested. And I will pretend that you are not pretending because I love to talk about it. :)

I have promised myself and forced everyone around me to promise that they will beat me if I say "IT'S MY DAY!" They have taken this charge seriously and if I say anything even close (I haven't said it...yet), they remind me of that promise. I'm such a lucky woman.

Wedding Size: small. well, 75-ish people. the guest list is up to 104 but I know some people won't come (I hate the idea of inviting people that I know won't come, it seems like begging for presents, but I also don't want anyone in my mom's family to be offended, so I have to ask them all). We are thinking about putting a notation on the invites that says "no gifts, please" but I'm not sure that ANY mention of gifts on the invite is appropriate.

Colors: Black and white (maybe black and ivory). I like the contrast, it's easy to match and it'll be easy for my Maid of Honor and other attendant to find dresses that aren't ridiculously priced.

Flowers: I like lillies of the valley, stargazer lillies and tiger lillies. I'm also planning to have a locket on my bouquet with my sis's pic in it so she can be with me.

Food: neuvo latino. empanadas, tamales, quesadillas, masa crepes, and other delicious munchies. It's going to be more of a cocktail party than a sit down dinner (I find those very boring and not condusive to mingling). I'm also totally over Cal-Italian and Cal-Asian. Love the idea of well-done latino style food.

We're doing the reception in an art deco building so we're trying to keep with that theme as much as possible. Not so much "The Shining," but more "Hemingway in Cuba." (I know, try to keep from rolling your eyes, but it helps the vendors understand what we are going for).

Honeymoon is totally not set in stone.

Alaskan Cruise: I think it'll be too late in the year for an Alaskan cruise, and Mr. Suza has a germophobic aversion to cruise ships. It's still a dream, though.

Cuba: We'd both love to go to cuba and I'm sure we could fly direct through Cancun. United flies direct to Cancun from SF.

Baja California: Mr. Suza's mom's family has some hotels down there, near the tip. It would be fun to go there, I'm sure they would treat us well, but I'd also like to be able to relax a bit.

Palm Springs: This appeals to me beause I love the desert. I love sunrise in the desert. And I keep reading stuff about how PS is totally mid-century retro cool.

If you have any advice (especially about the honeymoon location!) I'd be thrilled to hear it. Really. :)

XOXOXOXO

TooSense said...

suza, admit it... the colors are black and ivory so you can wear black nail polish. ;)

That sounds like a very warm and down-to-earth wedding. Very nice. I had a pavlovian response reading it. I'm not sure if it was the food or the thought of a roomful of latinas...

The Inner Eyeball said...

Of, course you'll be the one wearing black, right?

The Inner Eyeball said...

And the veil to match, right?

Ah, you know Suz, there is a no more beautiful sight than a blushing bride anticipating her honeymoon...how about Greece? I hear the beaches are fabulous there.

TedSpe said...

Mindful Life,
Good call on the food. I was going to suggest that. Much more festive than a sit down "chicken or steak?" meal. Plus, everyone can have as much or as little as they want, mingle and throw stuff;)
`
TooSense. It was the food *and* the Latinas ;)
`
And yes, Gina, the beaches *are* beautiful in Greece. It would make a great honeymoon. I was fortunate to visit there during the Olympics in 2004. Truly stunning. Athens is like any big city but the islands are breathtaking.

My best wishes and congratulations!

The Inner Eyeball said...

Personally, I think she should try to conceive that baby of hers on a Greek beach. Think of how romantic that would be....

And, I'd say to hell with a kiddie Church wedding and poofy dress and veil.. I'd run off and get married in Paris or Rome in a dress I picked up there, with a couple of strangers as witnesses and for flowers some fragrant garden roses from a street vendor.

TooSense said...

That is so weird, gina. I once got married to a couple of strangers in dresses that smelled like roses that I picked up from a street vendor in Paris, too!

The Inner Eyeball said...

shut up, NoSense, you know I can't write.

J.M. Ferretti said...

Gina, you're writing was just fine. TooSense was just being his silly self! (Or, that story could be true, in which case, I'd like to hear more...)

Maybe I reached my romantic potential when I was a pre-teen, but other than "Colour My World", this is my my second choice for first dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veoq02P6dBk&feature=related

J.M. Ferretti said...

Oops! Not quite pre-teen. This came out when I was 14...

TooSense said...

What ferret said, gina.

J.M. Ferretti said...

...but with the proper form of the word 'your'...

TooSense said...

I vote for Cuba for the honeymoon. You have to see Cuba before the embargo is lifted and America turns it into a strip mall.

Mindful Life said...

sorry I haven't been writing as much today, but my best friend here in the city is having a baby! TODAY! So, I'm sitting for her older child...

More later.

:)

TooSense said...

Here it comes...

The Inner Eyeball said...

Oh, please tell me you're just kidding about those songs, ferret. Even I'm not that sappy.

I really do think Suza should elope, don't you? Think about it. She could
take the money she'd spend on a fancy Church wedding and sneak off to Paris. Just do it spontaneously and not tell anyone. Then she could come back and let her parents throw a party in the newlyweds honor. It would be a lot less of a headache. Weddings--even for 75, are tiresome and stressful and over-rated, trust me.

Besides, black and white is so passe. And so are stargazer lilies.

The Inner Eyeball said...

'Oops! Not quite pre-teen. This came out when I was 14...'

That's funny, ferret. When I was 14, it was 1977, that song came out in 76....and I turned 14 in November. I thought you were born May 7, 1964.

Just how old are you, anyway? You can fess up, we won't mind.

Mindful Life said...

hehehe FH - Always and Forever. Nice. This is where the slight difference in our ages comes into play - I think at that point I was still crushing on Sean Cassidy. I don't think the Do Ron Ron would be great for a wedding dance, but I could be wrong.

I love the thought of going to Cuba also! Mr. S is into it (I think). I read a couple of unenthusiastic comments about it in "Badlands" (a lonely planet book), but I've heard great things from other people who have been there.

I also love black nail polish, but I think I'll probably go for a nice french manicure or a dark purple maroon color.

here's the link to Daydreamer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77X6xa453gM
my favorite lines from that song are:
He lends his coat for shelter because he's there for you
When he shouldn't be
But he stays all the same, waits for you, then sees you through
...
It will feel like he's been there for hours
And I can tell that he'll be there for life

and Love is the tender trap:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oZP4yZ0LSc
I think it's a really cute song.

Speaking of my 8 year old self - another song that MUST be played is Copacabana by Barry Manilow. Man, I had a crush on him. I love a man with a big nose. Seriously. I find it really sexy.

J.M. Ferretti said...

gina - am I your own personal obsession? When I linked to that youtube clip, the person who posted had written that it came out in '78. Sorry, I didn't check their data...seriously, get a life!

If you're going with the Art Deco theme, here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMQqGCjLx0g&feature=related

You can't go wrong with Cole Porter!!!

The Inner Eyeball said...

So, Suza, you're a size Queen, too?

And ferret--I'm a one...that should explain everything to you.
I've always been partial to the Eagles. I really adore 'Witchy Woman', but I think 'Best of My Love' would be more apropos. Or in honor of Mr. Suz's Mexican heritage, how 'bout 'tequila Sunrise'?

The Inner Eyeball said...

I think I found the perfect song...from Creedance:

I put a spell on you
Because youre mine.
You better stop
The things that youre doin.
I said watch out!
I aint lyin, yeah!
I aint gonna take none of your
Foolin around;
I aint gonna take none of your
Puttin me down;
I put a spell on you
Because youre mine.
All right!

Mindful Life said...

FH - that is totally the SOUND we are going for. I didn't know that sinead sang that particular song, though. Interesting.

Mr. S also discovered this lady, Blossom Dearie. Unfortunately, she passed away recently, but I LOVE her version of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top." I'm dead serious.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoZd4GKzOdQ

She makes that silly song VERY hip and amazing.

I knew once that I couldn't be friends with a girl when I was listening to Billie Holiday and she says "what's that? it sounds like cows dying." Really? Billie Holiday? Never heard of her? huh.

The Inner Eyeball said...

Typically, in your snobbishness, you write people off before you can accept their differences.Have you read Billie Holliday's bio?

She sounded like a dying cow for a reason. That person at least picked up on the emotion behind the music. No wonder you're still going for the silly kiddie wedding.

TooSense said...

I tend to get cranky when I haven't eaten, too. Of course, amphetamines don't really help the situation...

If you're considering 'I Put a Spell on You', I recommend Bryan Ferry's version. Wait until everyone's had a few too many and watch the room spin.

TooSense said...

Roxy Music's 'To Turn You On' is a personal favorite that is only semi-sappy (maybe 1/4).

TooSense said...

Scratch that recommendation... sad ending. Unless you're a glass half full type or like ellipses...

winkingtiger said...

"I Put A Spell On You" was originally done by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, it has also been covered by Marilyn Manson...but I wouldn't recommend that song for a wedding anyway. May I suggest "That Old Black Magic," the Louis Prima/Keely Smith version? Much classier...

Mindful Life said...

I like "I put a spell on you" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins - THAT is a very cool song.

I also like "More than This" by Roxy Music. Why don't more people like them? Maybe it's just Mr. Suza who doesn't like them?

I love a singer called Keren Ann. Adele sounds a lot like her. The breathy, almost whispery sound. This is one of her songs from a few years ago (in English).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cCrpd-aYwU

I also love Diana Krall. She's married to Elvis Costello, which is totally cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNp79hF-xZw

I'm seeing a definite pattern, but it's what I like - what can I say? :)

I recently fell head over heels in love with the voice of Madeleine Peyroux. Her cover of Leonard Cohen's, Dance Me To the End of Love" would be a good choice.

The Inner Eyeball said...

hmph. Me and Herb Caen...

I love happy endings...they just don't always happen for some people. Just ask Scarlett....

How about this song: Bobby Vinton's 'i love how you love me'?

Not swing -era, but still romantic.

You know Suz, about this wedding thing. Are you really doing this or is this just a lark? Because a pro-choice lady pushing 50,that has been living with her boyfriend for years looks a little stupid wanting to have a fancy white wedding in a Catholic Church in this economy.

I mean this in the nicest way. 'Cause we're not friends and I can be objective.

Mindful Life said...

I love madeline peyroux as well. I've had her CDs for quite some time. we will definitely play her. :)

TooSense said...

When I hear Madeleine Peyroux I just want to turn her off and put on Billie Holiday. For me, that's a sure sign of the difference between influence and imitation. I know she has her fans...

Roxy Music doesn't usually rank high on military men's lists, understandably. I always felt that Duran Duran was Roxy Music aimed at the teen set (that phrase makes me feel like I'm wearing a shawl collar sweater and have a pipe in my mouth).

TooSense said...

I like John Lennon's 'Woman', for later, not the first dance, which should be more of a mutual thing.

TooSense said...

Neil Young's 'Harvest Moon' is a good one, especially once the old folks shuffle out there.

The Inner Eyeball said...

You just stop it, TooSense.

Why is it that you men know how to shut us up?

Mindful Life said...

ahhh, that makes sense because I LOVE Duran Duran. or at least I did in the 80's. :)

I agree that there isn't as much raw emotion in Madeline's music, but I still think she is worth listening to - I really like her. Billie Holiday's music is more for when you are sad - I like her better than Ella because of that raw emotion in her music. Especially Strange Fruit. Wow, what a powerful song.

I wanted the father/daughter song to be "Wild Horses" but my dad wanted something short. Also, it might be too much of a romantic song...you know I can't really tell what it's about to tell the truth. It's sort of all over the place, lyrically.

Maybe we should dance to "Sweet about me" by Gabriella Cilmi.

Favorite line:
Nothing's sweet about me. :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJuqRmE_YHk

I'm not going to win a debate saying Madeleine Peyroux is better than Billie Holiday, but being alive does have its advantages. Lyrics are really important to jazz singing, one of the reasons I like it is because you can understand them, and Peyroux can cover 50 years' worth of songs from the great writers who have been working since the death of Lady Day.

As for what lingerie should be worn on the honeymoon, I recommend this sexy outfit.

TooSense said...

Yogi, you've convinced me. About Madeleine Peyroux, I mean. I'm afraid to click that link at work :)

TooSense said...

suza, how about Patty Larkin's 'You and Me'?

TooSense said...

This isn't the official video of it, but it's one gina might like...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlgXRL_QrdY

xootsuit said...

Wild Thing. That's the love song this old guy would like to hear.

A friend of mine had the orchestra at his wedding kick it off with Great Balls of Fire.

The Inner Eyeball said...

So Yogi, is that you or LaSalle in the picture?

If it's you, you're HOT!

The Inner Eyeball said...

Off-topic, excuse me, but see what I'm talking about?

Lotta hunter-peckers out there in The Castro. Maybe Berlin too.

Someone should get a hold of that play.

J.M. Ferretti said...

suza - did your friend have her baby?

Mindful Life said...

no fresh babies yet...just got a project out the door so will write more later. :)

Mindful Life said...

omg - I love that You and Me song!!! That is totally awesome.

As far as peignoir sets go, I'm in love with this one, but the cost is a bit prohibative...

(it's just a nightgown and a dressing gown on a manequin - nothing risqué)

TooSense said...

Johnson & Johnson. Waxed. It's custom sizable, waterproof and mint flavored.

Yeah, I think Patty got it right.

The Inner Eyeball said...

All right. That is a really pretty set. I love that robe. But 650.00 bucks? That's a lotta money for something you won't be wearing long.

Why don't you try ebay? You might find something just like it for a lot less.

J.M. Ferretti said...

suza - when I saw the photo, I was thinking 'I don't care what it costs, it's worth it!'. Then I saw what it costs...YIKES!!! While you would definitely feel and look like a million dollars (Aus), you needn't spend that much! Fortunately, you have plenty of time to find something quite lovely. (Gina's got a good idea...)

Mindful Life said...

baby boy!!!!!

J.M. Ferretti said...

Congratulations to your friend!!! (Don't tell her I said this, but girls are better...)

Mindful Life said...

she has a girl already. glad the baby will hve a big sister to boss him around (mr suza has 5 big sisters and 1 little one, which I believe is one of the reasons he is so wonderful).

before she had the first one I remember her telling me that she sort of wanted a boy because she thought it was important to raise a boy "right." She's just as much of a feminist as I am so I'm sure that, plus the fact that he's going to have a bossy older sis, means that she's going to have a lot of fun and do a great job!

The Inner Eyeball said...

Poor little guy. Why not just castrate him now along with the circumcision?

Dan Gonzales said...

Song suggestion: "She" by Elvis Costello. Damn song nearly made me cry at the end of Notting Hill.

And be careful about alcohol consumption. It can get away from you.

Mindful Life said...

I LOVE THAT SONG. I love Elvis Costello. I asked Mr. Suza if he liked it and he said "no" but I was humming it all day and he finally asked me what it was.

Maybe it will happen...it makes me cry too. I think I'm a bit overly-emotional lately. I'm just so grateful for everyone and everything and for my parents coming up and for Mr. S's sister visiting and coming with us to try a caterer, whom we L-O-V-E-D!

So, we found our caterer today!

Ticking things off the list...yea!

Mindful Life said...

oh, and I will definitely watch the alcohol consumption - I'm not much of a drinker and I always know my limit (4 makes me throw up). It's a good rule with the added benefit of being true. :)

Dan Gonzales said...

Suza, depending on what format your DJ will use for song playback, maybe you can have him include in his playlist the Lagoons' rockin' version of The Kids Are Alright? :)

Mindful Life said...

I love that song - but I don't think I've heard the lagoons version. They're using CD's. At least the onee we have picked preliminarily is.

Also, I love this song...hehehehehehehehehe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAOsb9eF8jM

Something about that video reminds me of the movie "Nashville."

Dan Gonzales said...

Suza, I'm pretty sure you've got that recording on MP3. :)

I'd forgotten all about that Donna Fargo song, it's so cute. :)

And here's something from my buddy who's gone Hawaiian:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMrjmi-rIxg

Mindful Life said...

that was a great video...maybe I'll reconsider going to Hawaii for a honeymoon after all. He made it look pretty good! Cute song, too. :)

And...you totally nailed me on the Donna Fargo song. I love it for the same reason I love The Freshman. It's utterly silly.
