Hi all - I have news:
We are opening escrow on the house tomorrow!!! (I must be crazy!) However, the house is very old, so I am waiting to see what the pest & home inspectors have to say before I decide for sure to go ahead with the purchase. I don't mind putting some money into the house, but I don't want to buy a money pit... It's a big purchase, and I want to make sure I go into it with eyes wide open.
So, there you have....you can go back to bickering, now.
UPDATE: Well, the home inspection left a lot to be desired. Let's just say that I'm not all that keen on repairing the foundation, replacing the roof, fixing the plumbing, and removing the dry rot...bleah! The search begins anew!!!

If you don't anything, it's pretty strange that you knew immediately that anon was getting at in his first cryptic comment.
I didn't get it at the first comment. It was the second. The term "pre-code" was used.
It's just logic
Hi all. Glad to see nothing ever changes... not.
1. I have a Les Paul. It *is* extremely heavy compared to other models, but it's worth it. R.I.P. Les.
2. DEVO's 1st album cover was an image of Chi Chi Rodriguez that was distorted and actually re-drawn... look closely and you will see it's not even a photo. This is more Gina's department at this point...
Not at all, Ms. Gavone. I would definitely defer to you about things relating to photography, I don't know much about it. That's all I was getting at: ask a Professional, I always say. Unlike hartal/no one/bernardi/carowan/laxmi, I like your work...
Professional compared to me, I mean. :)
Not knowing your skills at photography,I'm not sure how to take that. But, thanks.
my guess is that hartal is going by not laxmi but shah rukh khan at sfgate.

Enjoy Gavone. On digital photo forgery.
Check this out, from Cala Marinucci's blog:
*Ratbastard:"...I just hope the powers that be have placed help wanted ads, and all of you who are unemployed right now would be a good time to go place an application with BART, there should be a lot of openings if the Board have the balls, and Arnold decides to declare it a State emergency due to the economic damage that will be caused. This character just created an identity on the 14th of this month.
And you say I have no influence. He posted on the comment section of one blog, she uses his comment in her story. That's funny.
That Mickey Rat thing is too much like LaSalle. It looks just like him. Look at the bottom of the picture, it says, "It' just a kiss away" LaSalle did blog entry or two on that. And if you read between the lines and have followed his blog, it matches up. I swear. And I noticed the guy changed the date on the story. It had said 2007 on the bottom. Homo!

The only problem is Doctor's have changed the Hippocratic oath. Our country no longer guarantees the right to life. It decides when a person is a person. Oh, slippery slope.
Let it be noted that I didn't vote for this administration.
One more thing, Hartal.
I just my final grades. I got an A- in my narrative storytelling class and a B in art history. I guess I can write in addition to take photographs.
So,put that in your pipe and smoke it.

The average cost of an abortion is 621.-2000. Multiply that by 46 million. What is that? 46 billion dollars? I'm bad at math--you figure it out.
So, dsg. Did you like all of my entries this morning on my blog. I thought of you every time I posted an image.
Memory Motel?
Oh,this is so gross. He reviews all the gay movies.
"The filmmaker claims that all the characters in "9 Dead Gay Guys'' are based on -- get this -- people whom a friend of his actually knows. That's exactly what this movie seems like: a bunch of disparate real-life elements sewn together into a nonsense plot by someone who has no firsthand knowledge of what he's talking about. "
An it sounds like he does, doesn't it? I think he belongs to the LA gay subculture. He can't come out because it's the movie industry gay club. That's why he mentions going to LA a lot.It would be a conflict of interest. I suppose his wife is the Beard of Avon. That's gotta be it. What a real rat.
AND this, too from 02/2009:
Dear Mick: Are there movies you've seen that you love but never want to see again? For me, "Cries and Whispers" is one of the greatest films I've ever seen, but also the most harrowing experience I've ever had in a movie theater, and not an experience I want to repeat.

Chris Hammond, San Rafael
Dear Chris: "Savage Nights" was my top movie of 1994 (when it was released in the United States). I've tried to watch it since, but I can't seem to bring myself to do it. It's written and directed by Cyril Collard, who also stars, based on his autobiographical novel about a bisexual who gets AIDS, doesn't tell anybody and keeps going around having unprotected sex with uninfected people. Great movie, but, as you can probably tell, a little on the relentlessly downbeat side.
That's funny, considering his latest blog entry. Oops--I'd better not say that word.
Joe Gage sure likes to quote MLS.
Way too much work for this year; it kicks in at more than full time tomorrow. I'm out for the foreseeable future. If you don't hear from me, it's not because I am getting a colonoscopy.
The hard part about a colonoscopy is the day before. That's the really unpleasant part.
Gina, those are some very interesting photos. The colors are kind of scary.
Or, maybe it's areference to this movie:
In some stories, such as Babel-17 (1966), same-sex love and same-sex intercourse are clearly implied but are given a kind of protective colouration because the protagonist is a woman who is involved in a three-person marriage with two men.
He's very pro-homosexual. Google his name with the word gay and see what comes up. What a strange pattern. Maybe he's The Prince of Heidleburg.
Personally, I don't care whether Mick La Salle is gay or straight. Why would that matter to me?
It's his personal issue if he is gay, and his personal choice whether to be closeted or not. There have been and will continue to be gay film critics, and gay writers, and gay bloggers, and so it's not as if he'd be a trailblazer one way or the other.
Also, I don't think it's important whether one is gay or not as far as supporting gay rights is concerned. When I've expressed my point of view in favor of gay marriage, I've informed people that I'm not gay, but that's for the sole benefit of straight opponents of gay marriage who can't conceive that a straight person could be in favor of gay marriage.
I'll tell you who I'm really annoyed with right now--Newt Gingrich. There's a short item in Time about the fact that he's recently converted to Catholicism. First, the man has displayed the ethics of a snake, so I'm not convinced of the sincerity of his beliefs. Second, one of the first things he did after he converted was to criticize Notre Dame for having Obama as its commencement speaker. While vocal, the people who opposed Obama's presence were a distinct minority, and who is he anyway as an outsider to the university to express any sort of view relating to the invitation of the commencement speaker at my alma mater? He can take his Georgia Bulldog and put it where the sun don't shine.
wv: jawsi
Your argument that being a closeted gay gives one an unfair advantage in discussing ideas is silly. Homosexual persecution of gays isn't an argument in favor of gay rights, it's a factual circumstance that gay rights proponents are trying to address. One doesn't have to be gay to know about gay-bashing.
Further, most harmful aspects of homosexual behavior are cultural artifacts, not natural problems, which means that adjustments in cultural attitudes would eliminate most if not all of the harmful aspects (some psychological issues with homosexuality would also be reduced by eliminating cultural biases).
On the biological side, if homosexuality were such a negative thing, shouldn't it have died out by now? Its persistence weighs against the idea that it is biologically harmful. Also, most gay folks don't engage in disease-spreading behavior, and the spread of AIDS today has more to do with heterosexuality and drug use than homosexuality. And as for gays being unable to have children, as you note, it should be an easy fix, and the example of the fellow from Oregon who got pregnant last year shows how it could be done if people wanted to do it.
Sorry, Gina, I simply disagree with your line-drawing. Birth is one of the most significant events in human existence, so it's not a big stretch to say that equal human rights arise at that point, not before.
One last thing: I didn't say that homosexuals don't kill with disease, I said that the idea that there are more homosexuals killing with disease than there are other people killing homosexuals was baloney. The numbers just don't make sense.
wv: prestomp
Gina, your argument about Mick being closeted is still without merit. What your argument boils down to is that a straight person can't be in favor of gay rights, because if the person favors gay rights, he or she must be gay.
As for what is fact and what is opinion, I would suggest that it's your scientific "facts" that are in fact biased opinion, while what you are saying is "just my opinion" actually has factual evidence behind it.
Re the Oregon case, let's be clear about one thing: That person was the one who made the decision about what he wanted. It sounds like you would have the state impose your idea of "normality" on others. For a conservative, such a thought should be anathema.
Gina, re homosexuals killing with disease, I've stated my position twice and you've misstated it twice. Please read more carefully.
wv: slate
left out two words, sorry.
As far as MLS, if he is indeed a closeted gay man, misrepresenting himself is not ONLY personally unethical, it's professionally dishonest.
Gina, what difference would La Salle being gay have on his movie reviews? His opinion would be his opinion, regardless of whether he's gay or not. What you're suggesting is that people ought to reject his opinions based merely on the fact that he's gay. That's bigoted.
Gina, without looking beyond mere life expectancy, there is no way to differentiate the effect of gaybashing murders versus AIDS on the average life expectancy for gay men.
WT, getting back to an earlier question, why Chi Chi?
Gina, let me be clear: When I read something, I'm not concerned about whether the author is gay, straight, black, white, male or female. I read for factual accuracy (is what he writes true or not), logical strength (do his arguments make sense or not), and writing skill (good grammar at a minimum, nice turns of phrase are key). La Salle's strength in those areas are why I like him as opposed to, say, Rex Reed or Leonard Maltin (to take two people whose personal and political views are at extreme opposite ends of the spectrum). And to be clear, I dislike Maltin and Reed not because of who they are, but because of the poor quality of their reviews.
Gina, I liked Milk, I thought it was a deftly-handled biography, which had the added feature of being fairly accurate (which is one reason I am not pleased with either The Great Debaters or Hurricane). Are you going to say that I'm gay?
Gina, while I don't have any good figures on the number of gay folks who are murdered because they're gay, I would suggest that gays' self-esteem issues, which are a function largely of societal disapproval (one of those artifact factors I spoke about), are a major factor in (a) risky behavior (e.g., unsafe sex, drug abuse, etc.) and (b) suicide, both of which reduce average life expectancy.
wv: squanksp
I saw a couple of funny items on FAILblog.org this weekend. First was a screenshot of a Fox News broadcast of a map of the Middle East, in which Iraq was misidentified as Egypt. Second was a short video clip of a priest at an outdoor ceremony trying to sprinkle holy water on the congregation and speak to them through a microphone; needless to say, his confusion between the two similarly-shaped objects resulted in great damage to the electronics when he tried to dip the microphone in the holy water.
But, if you know what perspective they're speaking from, don't you take that into consideration? If he were a conservative Catholic priest, would that make a difference?
I happen to like his writing also. It's strangely comforting. I don't always agree with him, but I think he knows his stuff very well for the most part. I would respect him more however, if I thought he were completely honest. Do you like liars?
I think you're somehow suggesting that I think homosexuals are less deserving of equal treatment than others. In fact, I think my position is far more beneficial to them than yours. I'm all for honest levels of discourse. I think I'm acting in their best interest more than you. You're suggesting that we not address the real health concerns, just white wash them. I'm suggesting we honestly examine them and try to fix them. If we were to replace alcoholism with homosexuality, your position would be to say that there's nothing harmful about it, it's just a matter of convincing people that it's their problem in perception, not the alcoholics with the disorder. My position would be, don't kid yourself. It's harmful, let's find a way to alleviate the problem on a physical level. And, what's wrong with that? That's far more human than pretending the problem isn't real. Again, I think your position only supports an industry motivated by unethical profit.
I am my brother's keeper, after all...are you?
Gina, my view is that if society quit persecuting homosexuals, they would lead happier, longer lives. Your view that I am somehow acting to support an avaricious industry is totally wrong.
Gina, you're the one who's not acknowledging the facts behind my views. Homosexuality is neither a physical abnormality or a mental disease, based on the majority views of experts in the fields. Shortened lifespans are not necessarily the result of mental or physical defects, but are likely caused by societal factors. The idea that social factors play a large role in risky behavior on the part of homosexuals is not controversial. While nobody forced your cousin to engage in risky sex, one can easily see how social disapproval could harm his self-esteem to the point that he behaved recklessly, without regard for his best interests, resulting in harm to himself. Not all gay men engage in risky behavior, and I would suggest that those gay men are likely to have stronger egos and self-worth.
You've really drank a big cup of that koolaid, haven't you. Those so-called experts also just happen to be members of the same club/industry.It's in the best interest of the medical industry to promote ill-health. That's why they changed the Oath. They saw a way to make a lot of money.
I'm beginning to think you're deliberately being a butthead because you like the attention. Isn't this what your girlfriend is supposed to be for?
It's a good thing I'm not your girlfriend because all we'd do is argue and have sex to make up for it. We'd be poor, but happy, eh?

Life of Jesus
Never did he show any desire for power or wealth but focussed instead on what he knew to be wise - to follow a life of love, sincerity and commitment to our heavenly Father. Throughout his time on Earth Jesus passed on this wisdom to others, encouraging them to give up the pointless pursuit of treasures on earth. He taught that a loving, healthy relationship with God and with our fellow human beings would produce a much more fruitful and useful life.
Love for others
His compassion for others has been unrivaled by anyone who has ever lived before or since. His life is a testimony to the sincere love that he had for those around him. Time after time we are told of how Jesus helped those who could not help themselves.
"Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them." (Matthew 15:30)
In our modern world we are sceptical of miracles yet even today we see what can happen when people believe strongly in something. Jesus showed us what belief can accomplish when he gave sight to the blind, speech to the dumb and the power to walk to those who were lame.
His motive for using this healing power was not to make a display before others but a simple, deep care for the needs of the weak and ill.
Pharisees
Yet not everyone who came into contact with Jesus appreciated his teachings or his healing powers. A group of people, called Pharisees, became particularly upset with him. These Pharisees claimed to be religious and holy yet Jesus knew that in their heart they were as guilty as anyone else, and Jesus condemned them for it.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness." (Matthew 23:28)
Jesus told them that God did not care about vain rituals and sacrifice, all that mattered was a sincere love for God and for man. If only they paid more attention to helping others and less attention to rules and regulations, they would be much better off.
Persecution
Rather than changing their ways they decided that they had to get rid of Jesus. As a result Jesus was always on the move, having nowhere to call his home. Within only a few years of starting his ministry, when he was just thirty-three years old, Jesus was arrested and handed over to the Romans who were ruling Israel at that time.
After an unfair trial Jesus was condemned to death by crucifixion. This method of killing prisoners was a horrendous, slow death where the body was nailed to a wooden cross and put on display in front of the crowds. We are given the following account of Jesus' death:
"Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.
When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. Above his head they placed the written charge against him THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS." (Matthew 27:22-38)

on homeownership. This is why I refuse to join the cheerleading for homeownership. Let people make decisions without peer pressure and false promises.
it's slightly astonishing that the Wall Street Journal is running a piece by Thomas Sugrue.
Don't be coy.
They give new meaning to the term tea party, don't they?
I've owned five pieces of property. Not all that it's cracked up to be.
Home ownership is indeed over-rated.
If I remember correctly, Kenneth Jackson has shown that the government intervened in the housing market during the Great Depression in order to counter the threat of Communism by trying to make workers look like they were something other than Marx's propertyless proletarians who had no stake in the capitalist system (I am sure that the resident expert here in Critical Theory and Marxism knows all about it). And then with wages having stagnated for a couple of decades and with people worrying about their 401K's during the Clinton era, homeownership was sold as the best form of retirement.
It works if the "system" holds. Bust the system and you're possibly dog meat...
I have a lot a relatives that made quite a bit of their wealth from property ownership. Middle-class folks now in the upper-echelons of monetary class. If you're careful in your fiscal management, and don't have a buffoon for an accountant, property can be a very good way to accumulate wealth.
It's timing.

In the current issue of Time, Joe Klein blasts the leadership of the GOP on health care reform:
"A striking example of the prevailing cravenness was Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who has authored end-of-life counseling provisions and told the Washington Post that comparing such counsel to euthanasia was nuts--but then quickly retreated when he realized that he had sided with the reality-based community against his Rush Limbaugh-led party. Mitt Romney, the Republican front runner for President according to most polls, actually created a universal healthcare plan in Massachusetts that looks very much like the proposed Obamacare, but he spends much of his time trying to fudge the similarities and was AWOL on the 'death panels.' Why are these men so reluctant to be rational in public?"
wv: tertl
Just pull your heads into your shells and ignore the facts....
I don't think partisan politics is in the best interest of the public.
Why do you persist in furthering such dishonesty, dsg?
I thought Klein was fair--he went down a list of past and current sins of the Democratic Party in his column as well. But in the present healthcare reform discussion, the GOP has been particularly craven.
Partisan politics is sooooo dull.
Why do we put up with it. I think I'm a Blue Dog Democrat.

Old news; I was in law school out here when this news first started hitting the papers, I remember it well, especially since my younger brother "came out" a couple of years later. Blaming gays for AIDS is old news, too, as well as a canard; the reality of all diseases is that they are amoral, because human behavior can be modified to pursue the same "immoral" ends while avoiding the disease. Gay bashing is old news, too, except that it's still ongoing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_LGBT_people#USA
Get your head outta your ass and learn to face facts.
Gays only give disease to themselves.
Interesting that you have a gay brother. Does he have AIDS? I think your opinion is colored by personal bias.
You know what I'm curious about? I'd like to know that if gays had the choice to be gay or not, if the solution was as simple as gene or chemical therapy, would they take it?
If it meant that they could not have to be burdened with their homosexuality? If it meant that they could be normal and have normal desires?
I think real progression would be to re-examine homosexuality from a new perspective--that maybe modern advances in science might fix the disorder rather than try to fix the symptoms of it.
I mean, if it means the difference between them continuing to be part of the gene pool, rather than a genetic dead-end, wouldn't that be the humanitarian thing to do?
If it were a genetic dead end, why does it persist? It should have died out if it were such a dead end.
You've noted that you have a gay relation, too, so you're no less unbiased than I am in that case.
Beyond that, the facts about AIDS speak for themselves, and the study that's being done is very important to dealing with the disease. All things considered, we've done much better with the behavior associated with AIDS than with the behavior associated with syphillis.
I told ya so:

Chronicle managers still working hit list
Job cuts loom after Labor Day
28 Aug 2009
Media Workers Guild
Management representatives of the San Francisco Chronicle met Friday with the Guild to discuss the company’s plans to eliminate jobs through a combination of buyouts and layoffs.
No details have been decided, the company said, although a few positions may be cut as early as next week. Additional announcements are expected after Labor Day.
The company continues to lose money. The operating losses for the year to date are running in excess of $1 million a week, including some costs related to the workforce reductions already implemented.
Some additional losses may be tolerated, the management officials said, but the company clearly intends to reduce the gap to as close to break-even as possible during the fourth quarter. We were told that Chronicle revenues keep sliding worse than expected, mostly because of the weak economy and ongoing problems of the news industry.
Any Guild member interested in discussing a voluntary buyout is encouraged to let this be known. You may contact your supervisor, Human Resources or the Guild. We will keep any buyout interest confidential during the initial discussions.
Ok. Now I feel sorry for them. Ouch, ouch.
Which is worse, a direct hit or a slow, lingering death?
So this list is dead; at least you all could talk about why.
Is no one to blame?

Hey, dsg. I just opened up a dialogue with my cousin about gay rights. I'm hoping he'll be able to discuss this with me without flipping out.
He won't speak to his mom because she won't back down from her views. I'm beginning to wonder who the intolerant one is. Interesting.
Dialogue is good, as long as both sides listen.
wv: dismally
This is what's funny. His whole objection is based on the religious aspect and intolerence of the gay lifestyle. He's wants his mother support his position with her vote, she won't do it, although she's willing to accept him and his married partner into the family. It's a mess, really. I feel sorry for their family. I wish there was something I could to help. I love them both, and I understand both positions.I admit I'm ignorant of the predjudice against gays, but I'm willing to let him educate me. I'm open to getting a better perspective. Unfortunately, he's not willing to see things from any other perspective himself. He only wants thing his way. To me, that's intolerance. There has to be some sort of willingness on both sides where everyone is happy.
Are you on Facebook? I just discovered...it's so much fun! We could yak over there.Tjis blog is dead. That is , of course, if you consider me friendly.
Please excuse my errors. I was thinking faster than I could type again.
What a SNEAKY RAT!!!!!!!
He's JEALOUS!
For dsg. BBC on how recession is affecting migration patters
http://tiny.cc/wpSYw
Thanks, Hartal, that's a fascinating report. I guess it makes sense that the recession would cause people to tend to stay put--migration depends on a perception that the prospects are better somewhere else, and in this recession, few places look attractive.
I'm slightly confused. Which anonymous am I dealing with here? I thought my profile here listed my contact address, which is all I thought was needed for Facebook. I haven't refused a friend request yet; I've even friended a fellow from my longstanding email group with whom I've had very heated exchanges over immigration (Latin Americans, in particular, but immigration in general).
Why, it's this anonymous, naturally. I tried doing a search, dsg, it didn't come up.
I'm having my doubts, though. You may link to this blog and that would link to me, and then my goose would be cooked.
You gotta understand, I come from a very conservative background and only let my rabidness flow all naked-like here.
Try it with Yahoo.
Wow! The quas' existence had no other purpose than sadly and incoherently trying to insult me. I am gone and the quas have nothing to say. This list is dead. Way too busy with work, so one of you will have to think of something to revive this list.
wow. way too busy with work. really. i have a job. i really do.
I'm glad to hear that, anon. You had me worried for a minute or two.
Now, what you need next is a real life and not that fishbowl existence you call reality.
get back to work, hartal. those 2008 extension HRBlock tax returns aren't going to calculate themselves. (what do they pay? pissant piece work or min. wage?)
You stole one of my favorite words, anon. Who do you think you are using it without my permission, anyways?
So very sad. No existence outside of desperate attempts to insult me from behind a veil of cowardice. Don't hate yourself too much.
uh, we're not interested in hearing about your "job" or reading your pretentious bs because we have a life, hartal. But you keep on shooting blanks in the dark here.
This place went blank after I left because you had nothing of your own to say. You have no life of your own: your life was carping against me from a dark corner, you poor and sad coward. I am gone, and you have no life. You only come back to life to insult me. It is absolutely hilarious that you act arrogantly while not allowing anyone to identify all the crap that you have written under previous names. But you can live with yourself. I suspect that no one else can.
Hartal. Has it ever occurred to you that you're insane? Not a little insane like a lot of people, but a WHOLE lot of INSANE?
Why don't you go get on FaceBook if you need to communicate so badly?
