Something Wonderful is About to Happen

At least, that's what the bumper sticker said. What it lacks in precision, it more than makes up for in optimism. But I guess it's that view, belief, hope that keeps people going. Honestly, if your personal philosophy is 'Something Shitty is About to Happen", it's going to get pretty hard to get out of bed after awhile. But, "Something Wonderful"? Who doesn't want to be around for that? All you have to do is keep putting one foot in front of the other, and pretty soon - Something Wonderful!!!

Here's the rub - "Wonderful" is pretty subjective. Your wonderful could be your neighbor's worst nightmare. And, is this a practical wonderful, or a fantastical one? Also, is free floating hope a good thing, or can you sometimes end up discouraged if the right wonderful thing doesn't happen. Leaving the satisfaction of your 'wonderful' needs to the fates, may bring us to an frustrated end - as Johnny Lydon and Public Image Ltd. so succinctly put it: "This is what you want. This is what you get."

At the risk of tempting the fates, and their quirky sense of humor, here are some wonderful things I'd like to see happen: My sister be happy again, and the Giants win the World Series. I'd like to see our troops come home from Iraq, and jobs for people who need them, college enrollments go up and prison populations go down.

Do you think that "Something Wonderful" is about to happen? What do you think it will be?

Meeting you would be something wonderful; and it's not about to happen.

DJ - that is so sweet, and very unexpected. Your comment counts as my wonderful thing for today...thank you!

something wonderful...wow, that's just a world of possibility, huh?

personally, it would be really wonderful if my dad would decide seriously to get healthy and do it. go to the gym, monitor his afflictions closer, all that. I guess a new baby would be wonderful, but not for me, not right this second. :)

globally, wonderful would be peace in the middle east, Africa forming a meaningful and proactive union amongst countries, Europe overcoming their long standing racism and reluctance to help out the countries they previously occupied (you listening to me, France?).

Well, yeah, and a lot of other things are about to happen, too.

So I find the slogan a bit unrealistic. On the other hand, I do not see how you can get through life without a reasonable amount of optimism and hope.

All of us in the States are looking at a very interesting new year. Hope all of you have a good one.

Could be! Who knows?
There's something due any day;
I will know right away,
Soon as it shows.
It may come cannon-balling down thru the sky,
Gleam in its eye,
Bright as a rose!

Who knows?
It's only just out of reach,
Down the block, on a beach,
Under a tree...
I got a feeling there's a miracle due,
Gonna come true,
Coming to me!

Could it be? Yes it could.
Something's coming, something good,
If I can wait!
Something's coming,
I don't know what it is,
But it is
Gonna be great!

With a click, with a shock,
Phone'll jingle, door'll knock,
Open the latch!
Something's coming, don't know when--
but it's soon;
Catch the moon,
One-handed catch!

Around the corner,
Or whistling down the river,
Come on, deliver
To me...

Will it be? Yes, it will.
Maybe just by holding still,
It'll be there!

Come on something, come on in,
don't be shy,
Meet a guy,
Pull up a chair!

The air is humming,
And something great is coming!

Who knows?
It's only just out of reach,
Down the block, on a beach,
Maybe tonight....

So much for optimism, Tiger. As I'm sure you know, the guy who sung that in the movie was shot to death in a schoolyard later that night.

winkingtiger said...

Yeah, Loo. That was just a little fin-de-année irony for y'all... ;-)

DJ & WT - but he was right, something did happen! As short-lived as it was, it was pretty darned WONDERFUL!!! (And not to put too fine a point on it, it was the next night.)

WT - that is so funny, I totally started hummming that song while I was posting. (cue "Twilight Zone" theme...)

I thought Ice was a questionable choice to lead the Jets after the death of Riff. Sure, he was cool-headed, but I would have gone with the fiery, energetic A-rab. Although, to be honest, I was rooting for the Sharks from the getgo.

winkingtiger said...

Ferret: well, it IS the ultimate song of optimism, although tempered by foreshadowing...

Ted: "Something's Coming," I can listen to. "Krupke," no problem. Put on "A Place For Us" and I turn into Tiger Butter...

Loo: Ice HAD to lead because he gets to sing the Thelonius Monk-esque "Cool". Who could challenge a guy who sings that?

Well gosh this is just swell, guys. (snap, snap)

But whatsofunnyboutpeacelovean-un-understanding?

Something wonderful would be US troops home from Iraq, immigration policies that treat people with dignity, and, WTF, union laws that do the same.

J.M. Ferretti said...

I can relate to rooting for the Sharks, they were the supposed underdogs. Interesting, the bad guys were really the Officer Krupke's, but typically the downtrodden were turned against each other to keep them from rising up to 'fight the power'.

As a girl, I thought Bernardo was so much sexier than Riff. However, when Ice took over...let's just say, that may be when my 'long and lean' phase began. Tony never did much for me, romantic but definitely not dangerous. (Except for the whole stabbing Bernardo part, but that was really an accident.)

Nowadays, I prefer romance. WT, I lose it during 'One Hand, One Heart': "...only death will part us now" (sob!)

I suddenly have an overwhelming urge to wear a lavender shirt and a Garrison belt.

speaking of "losing it" (and I have to admit, FH that I misread your comment at first and I thought you lost *it* during that song). Mr. Suza and I were driving down to SoCal and were listening to 70's and during "Tonight's the Night" by Rod Stewart, I pondered to myself...I said "Hmmm, I wonder how many girls lost their virginity to this song?" It was a bit before my time and I held onto mine longer than most (but not as long as Tina Fey) ;-)

One of my best friends in high school lost hers to "Hollywood Nights" by Pete Seeger. I honestly can't remember what song was playing when I lost mine...I don't think there was any music, and if there was, it was probably something on 91x.

Anyone else care to share? It is pretty wonderful, right? I'm not highjacking the blog, am I? If so, I apologize.

Shhh/Peaceful, Miles Davis, on one of those old turntables with an arm that popped up at the end of the side, swung over, popped down, and replayed the music.

TooSense said...

Hey suza, I think that was Bob Seger. But the picture of losing one's virginity to Pete Seeger got a laugh out of me.

On a side note, I now have the lovely Rita Moreno on my mind, and that's always wonderful. :)

Mindful Life said...

oh yes...bob seger. I like Pete Seeger better, personally... :)

I also lost my virginity listening to Pete Seeger. If I recall correctly, it was "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" Just kidding. I was listening to Carol King's Tapestry, like everyone else my age.

TedSpe said...

I suppose anticipation of losing one's virginity primarily falls under "Something Wonderful is About to Happen"

Well, sometimes bad things turn around completely.

I know the wv deal is pretty old, but "crink"? I resemble that.

It was over spring break, and we were watching tv - a PBS production of "The Scarlet Letter". Nothing like puritanical chauvanism to get the old motor revved!

TS - I knew that you would pick up on the Rita Moreno vibe and be over here in no time...

When it happens, I'll let you know.

ferret, it's a call I can't resist, like 'HEYYYY YOU GUUUYYYS!!!'

Speaking of musicals, sort of, have you guys seen "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog"?

TedSpe said...

Are you kidding?? I lost my virginity watching Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog!!

WT - there's nothing new about hythy. I have the complete collections of both Thnoop Dogg & Ludacrith...(tee-hee)

winkingtiger said...

True. I also wanted to say that I agree about 2008 ending...it can't be bad. :)

2009 started off well for me. The 7-11 where I get my morning joe had a display rack for calendars right by the entrance and the first one to catch my eye featured ferrets.
WV-ration...not a bad idea this year
