...is not the same as working a pole. Who knew? After attending my training as one of my county's newest poll workers - I do! Yep, your humble correspondent has decided to be a better citizen. It's all Greg Palast's fault (
http://www.gregpalast.com/). Reading about all of the shenanigans the RNC played with our democracy in 2004 got me all pissed off! Now, I really don't think that voter suppression is a serious problem here in my town, but just in case...watch out, potential evil-doers, ferrethead is on the job!

So, for the most historic election of my lifetime, and one of the most in our nation's history, I won't be home watching the returns, calling my girl friends, moaning in ecstasy/groaning in agony. Nope, I'll be helping Steve & Eve Neighbor participate in one of the greatest gifts ever given to a free people. That's a thought that makes me happy.
But, I'm still bummed about not seeing the returns...

minfuns as a word verification? I feel like a curmudgeon before I even post this. But post it I must. Just for balance. Fighting the forces of evil is not the same as fighting for good. Or for change.
Oh, wait. I had a problem with the tinyurl link. so I had to post again and my word verif. was "progre." Perfect.

lefty - good thing I didn't send my cape to the cleaners, then. Actually, I think that working on behalf of democracy is a good thing... This isn't about a candidate, it's about the process.
BTW - I meant to write a more humorous post, about how the one time I decide the work the polls is the year I MOST want to watch the returns. It's typical for me, to do the right thing at the wrong time, or vice-versa. Sorry if I came off all 'gee, aren't I great', I meant to be boasting about democracy...
Well, you do have a point, Ms. F. Sourly sniping away from the armchair in front of the tv, which of course is where I'll be, doesn't do much of anything. So good luck. (Maybe you'll be able to slip away on breaks to catch updates on the radio?)
Good for you! I hear that a lot of younger folks have vastly expanded the pool of poll workers this election. That's a terrific development, also. And lefty, fighting evil is still a major positive in my book. Given our circumstances, not getting any worse would be a big improvement over our recent past.
I am impressed by your participation in the upcoming Tuesday festivities. I've often thought about volunteering as a poll worker myself in years past. Unfortunately, I can't get out of Tuesdays at work (... if we held elections on a Sat or Sun, I probably still couldn't get out of work!) So I want a full report of the wonderful civic doings when you come back to post again. I'll be one of those people parked on my ass in front of a TV (at RF's place around 8pm. Maybe we'll send you text updates!)
word verification: "uncuffle" ...sounds vaguely soft, cuddly, and dangerous, eh?
My word code here, and I kid you not, is "porrni." Very well. You got it.
FH, the elevator video feed this evening, as I left the office, alleged that Obama's numbers are slipping. Not good news when you're plummeting 22 floors at full speed. But votes are votes.
I'm sure you'll help ensure that everyone who wants to vote in your tiny town will vote. Good work.
WV-rixest; most rix. Rix; formerly wealthy, now impoverished.
FH, check out a show called The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman. In my book, Kightlinger and Tom are the best female comedy duo ever, even better than Fey and Poehler.

xootsuit - don't sweat the national polls. Check out www.realclearpolitics.com or www.fivethirtyeight.com for electoral maps that average the state polls...that'll make you feel like you're on the express elevator to the penthouse!!!
yogi - I'll save your clip for tomorrow. I love Laura Kightlinger - she's a hoot!
my word is ebabdo. sounds like some sort of delicious marinated and grilled meat kabab - hmmm...maybe it's time for dinner.
Anyway, FH, good for you! Yea for being involved. You rock. Seriously. I should do more...maybe I'm lazy, maybe I'm shy, who knows?
ps - changed my pic to my fave one of my brother...hahahahah
xectors, my WV. A bit too close for comfort for a boy named xoot.
FH, thanks for both the www site recommendations.
www.realclearpolitics.com in particular is an amazing resource. There I found The Economist's endorsement of Obama. Very impressive, its international perspective.
Careful, Suza...Payback can be a Bitch...
I'm convinced this word thingy is rigged.
'whetym'?
WV embud: to smoke weed or move in with a friend
I'm starting to get worried that this election might be close enough for them to steal.
redlyr...
how did they know? My hair should naturally be red, and yet...it requires assistance.
gina - maybe posting THIS is payback for something he did, huh?
Yogi - I am also worried about them stealing the election. I've been worried about that since they stole the last two. However, there are MASSES of lawyers being stacked in the swing states to ensure that we don't get another Gore issue. They will litigate this one if something wonky happens, I am certain.
Suza...again--from the mouth of experience, PAYBACK CAN BE A BITCH...it can snowball into something quite horrific...just sayin'. But please feel free to keep us entertained...
pokingu??? pokingu???
I think I've been branded!
Ferret??? What do you have to say for yourself?
kinglols. no shit. So
A town too small to support one lawyer is big enough to support two.
Mindful Suza, don't put your faith in the lawyers. "They" litigated the 2000 steal all the way to the SCt, and the corruption of that court-of-last-resort decision still stinks to high heaven. Souter wanted to quit the Court afterward. Why didn't he? Why didn't the others who dissented quit? Investment in the institutions of "democracy." Protest at that level would be devastating to the powers that be. It can't happen. You just don't get into a position of power like that without making a commitment to system that gives you the power.
So I think another "steal" this time is possible. But I also think that racism is the problem that may make the count close enough to make that possible.
Go Barry (as his grandmother likes to call him)!
That's the problem when everyone concerned with a fair election doesn't holler when either side cheats--it becomes an acceptable thing that you either get away with or you don't.
I just can't believe this:'loberrin'
"nuclu"
yeah, nucyu too
I am nervous about Tuesday in a way I have never been over an election. This vote will tell us something very important about our nation.
What will it ell us?
And, I have a question: If it is discovered that the democrats have cheated, will any of you be upset with your party?
How's this word? 'nomyk'
god, these robo calls are driving me NUTS.
alisscl...I'm not sure what that means, but maybe if I said it outloud it would mean something.
hmmm...nope.
deeperh. well, better than deepers
My little kid loves to answer the phone now to hear who's calling. ("Hey, dad -- they got Danny Glover to do one!")
Hi Aunty Jean!!!
ummm I found this video and I didn't know how else to contact you.
I think you would find it interesting...but it kinda confuses me.
It might make your head hurt.

"blesc"--is the man upstairs trying to tell me something?
Politics is not for the weak of heart. It's a dirty business, and anyone who gets involved in it needs to have some stomach for it. Let's not forget Bismarck's comment about making laws.
Having said that, we have to do better. I can understand Justice Souter's response--sickened, but staying on because of the chance to do something better. The question is always where do you draw the line, and how do you live with yourself. I will say this--I'm close to fully fed up with the Dems (I was fed up with the GOP long, long ago). If they are not able to help get this country moving in a better direction soon, I'm going to start subverting the two-party system and looking for some better choices.
dsg - it's all down to the Senate. If we don't get a filibuster-proof majority, get ready for at least two more years of obstruction. If we can get rid of McChinless (KY), Dole (NC), Grabby McGrabass (MN), and that anti-American A-hole Chambliss (GA), we'll be on our way to making this a better country!!!
huh. that video confused me too.
tingstwi - sounds like a delicious candy.
Why, that video almost makes me want to vote for the black Republican candidate.
